Hinckley Pilot 35

Sailing Yachts

Hi All,

I am thinking of replacing Morning Star's original metal mast with a carbon fiber mast. My thought is that a carbon fiber mast would make her less tender and a bit faster, especially in a seaway or light air. I know there are LOTS of considerations to be thought through (cost, new sails, new rigging, etc.) I know that Panacea converted years ago and maybe a few others? I really need to talk with someone who has gone through the conversion to help me cover all the pros and cons.

Thanks,

Jay

Hi Jay,

If you decide to request quotes for your cost - benefit analysis, GMT Composites in Bristol, RI manufactured Panacea's spars in the early aughts and in 2022, they had the rig drawings on-file. Having never sailed a standard or aluminum rig Pilot, I am unable to provide insight into actual performance benefits or whether the juice is worth the squeeze.

Fair Winds,

Bill

Thanks Bill. Yes, if I do make the switch I will

definitely use GMT. Do you think that any of the MacDonald children would mind recalling their experience with the new mast (changes in sailing performance…)

Jay

Hello Jay,

I never met Gus nor any of his children, so I cannot say. In 2005, with the carbon stick, Gus won Marion to Bermuda. Shortly after I purchased Panacea, I met the then owner of GMT on a Bristol Yacht Club Cruise in Maine while crewing for a friend. He recalled building Panacea's mast and that Gus was certainly happy; less hobby-horsing and better light wind performance comes to mind. There may be a few riggers or yard hands at Brewer South Freeport with first-hand knowledge or might know someone who crewed for Gus. But, that is all circumstantial and doesn't really answer if the change would be worth it to you. If you find yourself in the Chesapeake, let's go sailing and you can get at least some first-hand experience. Fair Winds,

Bill

Hi Bill,

Many thanks for your note and all the information and suggestions about Brewers. My next call will be to GMT and then I’ll see if and when my bank account can be volunteered! If and when I’m down your way I will certainly give you enough notice and would love to see your gem for myself.

Have a spectacular fall season on Panacea!!

All the best,

Jay
